Raleigh’s Population Soars Past 400,000

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Raleigh’s population skyrocketed through the 400,000 marker in 2009. Raleigh came in with 405,791 residents as of July 1, 2009, which moved it up a spot in the rankings,and surpassed Colorado Springs as the 45th biggest U.S. municipality. In the past decade, Raleigh has added more than 117,000 jobs from 2000 – 2009, and is the 10th largest gain in the United States during that time period. During this decade Raleigh had a population growth of 40.7 percent, making it the fastest-growing of the country’s 50 largest cities. In March 2010, the Raleigh-Cary area was 49th in the U.S. Census Bureau population rankings with almost 1.13 million.
